National Popcorn Day

Yesterday was...
... but we celebrated TODAY!

We had a lot of fun learning with POPCORN today!

We started the day by estimating how many popcorn kernels were in a jar. Many of the guesses were in the 200's but Casey won the prize with his guess of 1,000. There were 1,219 kernels.

We also read all about popcorn long ago and learned some cool facts about popcorn as well. We wrote similes using our 5 senses to compare popcorn using "like" and "as."

After lunch we experimented with how much water is in a popcorn kernel. We weighed 40 popcorn kernels using a balance scale. After we found the weight, we brought the kernels over to the popcorn popper to turn them into popcorn. We then weighed the 40 popped pieces and found the difference.
Ask your child, "How/why does popcorn pop?"

After tempting the kids all morning with giant bags of popcorn sitting around, it was finally time to enjoy some!

We ate butter, cheese and caramel corn. We all picked our favorite and tallied everyone's vote. We took the votes and created a bar graph. Caramel corn won with 16 votes.

It's always fun to change things up once and awhile and have tons of FUN learning! Such a great day!!

We wrapped up the day watching the "How It's Made" episode on popcorn. Here is the link if you'd like to watch as well.

Happy National Popcorn Day!!!
