Looking Ahead... February 9-13

Important Dates:
  • February 14 - Valentine's Day Wear Red/Pink
  • February 14 - Pencil Sale 25 cents a piece, limit 4.

Writing:
I am very excited to be starting our next writing unit. The students are going to be writing a realistic fiction story. Always a favorite among third graders. Today we created a list of people, places and events that are meaningful to us. The rest of the week, we will create a list of possible story ideas, along with believable characters that will play roles in these stories.

Spelling:
We are back to our normal spelling/word study routine. A new spelling list is coming home today. This week we will be working on spelling contractions. Will will also recognize homophone words such as it's and its, and discuss when an apostrophe is used.

Math:
Last week our main math focus was rounding. We rounded to the nearest 100 and later moved to rounding to the nearest 10. This week we are focusing on adding three digit numbers. Some of the techniques we use may seem strange to you, but in the long run, we add and subtract the way you are used to doing it. We just learn different strategies for getting to the final answer.

Science:
Our sound test is tomorrow. Students are bringing home a couple review sheets tonight. Later this week we will switch gears from science for awhile as we move into learning about Michigan History.

Other News:
*Keep sending in Box Tops. We are currently in the lead to win a pizza party. The challenge ends toward the end of February.

*Valentine's Day Party will be on February 14 from 1:00-2:00. We would love to have your join us if it works with your schedule. We will be exchanging valentines that morning. If you are interested, a class list can be found in a previous blog post. Students do not need to bring in boxes/bags for their valentines. We will be making something in class on Wednesday.
