Reading:
Scholastic Reading Counts is off to a great start. I am impressed by the students eagerness to take quizzes on the books they are reading. This week will be begin our character unit. We will be using our previous read aloud, Because of Winn Dixie, and our new read aloud, Frindle, to discuss characters as a class. We will be looking at their traits, how they act, how they feel, etc. Students will take what they learn as a group and focus on the characters in their independent books.
Writing:
We are wrapping up our first personal narrative this week. Students spent time revising and editing their piece. We will spend a couple days writing a final draft, and then celebrate their hard work toward the end of the week.
Spelling:
The fifth list of spelling words is coming home today. This week we focus on spelling patterns for long u words. Please help your child study and practice these words at home too.
Math:
Our first unit is complete. You can find your child's assessment in their mail sometime this week. Tomorrow we will pre-assess unit 2 and then jump right in. This week we will be learning 6's and 8's count bys and multiplication. Please continue to practice multiplication facts each night at home. Thanks for all your help.
Social Studies:
We continue to study the geography of Michigan. This week we will be talking about the human characteristics that can be found in Michigan. (Bridges, highways, tunnels, etc.)
Science:
This week (weather permitting) we will be going on a "nature hike" around the outskirts of our playground. Students will be collecting leaves. We will then be classifying them into different categories, the largest being broadleaf and evergreen. Again, weather permitting, your child will have science homework on Tuesday. Look for an HW in the science section of their agenda.
*Our class Halloween party will be on October 30, from 1:00pm-2:00pm. Students will have time prior to this to get into their costumes. If you are planning on joining us, and bringing your son/daughters costume with you, please plan on being here by 12:45pm.
