Reading:
Scholastic Reading Counts quizzes start this week. Your chid will take a quiz for each book they read. Students will need to pass their quiz with at least an 80% or they will be expected to re-read the book, and try the quiz again. This is where the comprehension strategies we've been working on become really important. I only want them to have to take a quiz one time. You will find a progress report in your child's mail, every other Friday.
Writing:
Our drafts of our first personal narratives are finished. We will spend this week revising to make sure we have a strong setting, action and dialogue throughout or stories. We will also edit, checking for correct spelling and punctuation. Next week we will organize our story into paragraphs and write the final draft.
Spelling:
The fourth list of spelling words is coming home today. This week we focus on spelling patterns for long o words, as well as distinguishing the difference between one and two-syllable words. Please help your child study and practice these words at home too.
Math:
We will wrap up our first unit this week. This does not mean all facts have been learned. The rest come in unit 2. We will begin reviewing in class on Thursday. The test will take place next week Monday. Your child will be bringing a review sheet home either Thursday or Friday. Please continue to practice multiplication facts each night at home. Thanks for all your help.
Social Studies:
We continue to study the geography of Michigan. Today focusing on the vegetation and climate. Later this week we will be talking about our state's symbols.
Science:
Toward the end of this week we will begin our first science unit. We will be reviewing plant parts and functions and also discussing plant adaptations.
*Please remember to send in your child's party money by Friday if you haven't already.
*T-Shirt orders are also due Friday. The entire school is ordering "leader" shirts this year. I can't wait to see everyone wearing them!
