Important Dates:
- November 5 & 6 - Conferences
- November 14 - Sports Day
Reading:
We are continuing to roll through our characters unit. This week we will start a new read aloud, Clementine. We will be talking about the secondary characters found in this book. Clementine will also lead us into our next unit of study in a couple weeks, which will focus on books in a series.
Writing:
The students have chosen the topic for their next personal narrative and mapped their plan on a story mountain. This week we will write leads and begin drafting the stories.
Spelling:
Today you will find spelling list number seven in your child's folder. This week will will focus on words that have double consonants. We talked about how dividing the words into syllables can help us spell these longer words.
Math:
Our focus in math right now is 2 step words problems. This is a tricky concept for third graders. We will practice often in class, but any help at home will be appreciated. You will notice math homework came home TONIGHT. This is their first homework dealing with the 2 step problems. I don't want this to cause tears. If they don't understand it, please have them bring it back to school tomorrow, and I will assist them. They brought their class work home today too as a reminder to how we solved these type of problems. Also, please continue to practice multiplication facts each night at home. Thanks for all your help.
Social Studies/Science:
We are wrapping up our first social studies unit on the geography of Michigan. You will find a review sheet coming home tomorrow. Test will be on Thursday.
*A note from Ms. Johnson...
The 8th Annual PE CARES food drive will begin on November 5. The competition will run from now until November 21. In an attempt to bring in a better variety of foods, we are asking each grade level to bring in different food groups.
*Pre-K, K, and 1st - Carbohydrates (pasta, rice, crackers, cereal, etc)
*2nd/3rd - Fruits and Vegetables
*4th/5th - Proteins and Other (tuna fish, peanut butter, baked beans, etc)
**All: Toiletries (deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, etc.)
However, all food donations will be accepted, even if they don't fit into your category. The class that brings in the highest number of items will win a PE CARES t-shirt and a bowling field trip to Hudsonville Lanes! Thank you for your help and support in this community service project, and for taking this opportunity to teach our kids compassion and love for others!!
*If you need to contact Mrs. Zwiers while I am on maternity leave, her email address is: azwiers@hpseagles.net. I will be working right up until baby girl decides to make her arrival. :)
