Reading:
This week we will be meeting with reading partners. We will talk about how we can help each other in the reading process. Right now we are focusing on checking for understanding while we read. I have started our first read aloud, Because of Winn Dixie, to model these strategies to the students. Please remember to have your child read for 20 minutes each night. Minutes can be recorded on their "Learning Targets" page.
Writing:
This week we are generating ideas of topics we could write a personal narrative about. On Wednesday, students will be choosing one topic to develop into a story. Ask your child how many ideas they were able to come up with and encourage them to come up with even more. Remind them of special events that have taken place (possibly over the summer) that they could write about.
Spelling:
Today you will find a list of spelling words in your child's folder. We will spend all week focusing on different strategies that help us spell words. At the top of the paper, you will find a list of the areas we will focus on for the week. Please help your child study and practice these words. They will have a test every Friday. The paper they are bringing home does not need to come back to school, it is just another tool for practicing their words at home.
Math:
This week will will continue practicing our 5's facts. We will be learning division right along with multiplication. Students will also be learning their 2's count bys this week. Please help your child study their math facts at home. A packet to track their practice will come home tomorrow.
We started our first social studies unit today - Michigan Geography. Today we focused on the location of Michigan. This week we will also be discussing landforms and bodies of water that can be found in our state.
